The website of Iraqi cleric Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Husaini al-Sistani has been hacked. The content is replaced with some arabic writing and a video of of Bill Maher making fun of said web site.
It will be interesting to see the reaction to this in the Muslim world. Sistani is the most powerful Shia Cleric in Iraq, which pretty much means he is the most powerful, influential and respected person in that country. Once this story unravels and we see who is responsible (Western hackers? a rival Islamic group?) I would expect to see anything between strong rhetoric (best case scenario) and violent retaliation (worst case scenario).

This is extremely upsetting and disrespecful. The site is one of the most important resources for Shia Muslims all around the globe. Nevertheless, I hope to see this matter resolved as swiftly as possible, avoiding unnecessary conflict.
Might be a PR stunt. A distasteful one, but one we can ignore nevertheless. It’s really not worth it to retaliate against a minority of small-minded ignorant bigots looking to provoke a reaction.
